SECTOR CROSSOVER Unsurprisingly so, we also see a lot of synergies between the tech industry and other sectors of excellence in Edmonton including life sciences, agriculture, and energy or the clean tech industry.

Embracing innovation and digital technology is essential, and Edmonton is a leader in this space with an ecosystem ripe for both investment and the opportunity for knowledge sharing at business events. Our reputable pipeline of academic and industry experts, government investment and support, and a diverse array of incubators and research facilities all work collaboratively to grow and sustain this sector. While there are many players in the innovation ecosystem in Edmonton, the University of Alberta is one of note. As one of the world’s top 100 universities, the U of A has been at the forefront of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) research for more than two decades. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE Together with the University of Alberta, the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) is a key reason Edmonton is a core member of the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy. A not for profit, Amii has also been named a centre of excellence by CIFAR due to its groundbreaking research and support of AI commercialization. Altogether, the Edmonton Metropolitan Region’s efforts in AI are attracting significant corporate investment. NANOTECHNOLOGY Nanotechnology is growing as a competitive advantage for the Edmonton region due to the significance of this technology for many of our other thriving industries. We are home to advanced research in the nanotechnology field at the National Institute of Nanotechnology (NINT) and NanoFab Centre, both within the University of Alberta.
